The Sixth Form Day
The teaching day runs from 8.30am – 3.15pm. The day consists of five one hour lessons. Students belong to a tutor group and meet regularly with their tutor who monitors academic progress as well as giving help and support as needed. Students also attend a PSHE/Citizenship/Careers session once a week; this includes a sixth form assembly. Students have ‘free’ time during the day which they are expected to spend in a useful fashion – practising organisation, time management and study skills.
Finance
No fees are charged for Sixth Form courses. Many students are eligible for the Educational Maintenance Allowance which provides a weekly payment during term time, provided the student has attended all lessons. To apply visit http://ema.direct.gov.uk
Student Guidance
Personal Tutoring
Every student in Hayesfield Sixth Form is a member of a tutor group. Your tutor will be a member of the teaching staff, who may well teach you for one of your courses. Your tutor will work closely with the Head of Sixth Form and the Sixth Form Administrator to monitor your progress, achievements and attendance, and offer advice and guidance. She or he will also support you as you make choices about the next stage in your career and will write your reference, either for higher education or employment.
Assessment and Recording Achievements
Your progress will be monitored and reviewed on a regular basis by you and your subject teachers and tutor. Academic progress, together with records of your punctuality and attendance, and your involvement in the life of the school, will form the basis of Reports for you and your parents.
Careers EducationWe offer a full and varied programme which aims to equip you with skills for life and to broaden your experiences. We make use of specialist outside speakers wherever possible to provide an insight into the world of work and higher education.
Every student undertakes a planned careers programme and has the support of Connexions. There are opportunities to make higher education or industrial visits and to attend conferences and participate in presentations.
The Careers Library, based in the main library, has up-to-date prospectuses for universities and colleges throughout the country, together with a wide variety of information about careers and higher education, on paper and CD-ROM. It also has internet access to the UCAS web site. The school’s Connexions Adviser, Head of Careers and Sixth form tutors are all well-equipped to offer help and advice. Much of this information is also available in the Common Room.
During the summer term Y12 students participate in a ‘Next Step’ Day and our Higher Education Evening for parents has a good reputation for offering up to date information and advice on all aspects of applying to university, including student finance.
