In a rapidly changing world of work, it becomes increasingly important for students to be equipped with a portfolio of skills and experience which helps them to stand out from the crowd. To help and support Bath students in doing so, we have decided to develop the Bath Education Trust Award. Evidence shows that it is the combination of academic study, work experience and leisure interests, which helps to develop the broad range of skills and competencies that employers seek. The BET Award offers students a framework to help them realise their potential in these areas.
The BET Award is a certificated programme of transferable skills training and practical learning. In this rapidly changing world it is increasingly important that students acquire the skills and experience challenges which will help to improve their employability. Whilst the Bath Education Trust Award focuses on a six key skills the core skill we hope to develop is that of enterprise. This is a way of thinking and a skill set which will enable our students to cope with a range of situations and to draw on a set of values they can use to help them deal with difficult situations and come out stronger and successful.
This programme also offers a framework to accredit the skills and achievements of students not formally recognised through the current qualification framework. Its focus is to provide students with access to the skills which will enhance their future employability.

A group of Year 10 students and their parents from both Hayesfield Girls’ School and Beechen Cliff School attended a presentation evening at Rotork on Thursday 10th June to introduce the new Bath Education Trust Award. This exciting new venture has been planned by the two schools together with Rotork and Bath University as part of the Bath Education Trust activities.
Students will undertake a number of challenges designed to develop their skills and increase their understanding of the world of work. Peter France, CEO of Rotork plc explained to the students that in the present climate students applying for work or university will need something to make them stand out from the crowd and the BET Award is designed to do just that.
It is a fantastic opportunity for young people to be able to develop enterprise and confidence so that ultimately, whatever career they choose, they have a desire to be the best that they can be.
