Gifted and Talented students in Music:
- Enjoy listening to a wide range of music and sound from different eras, countries and using a wide range of musical instruments
- Listen analytically with sustained attention to music, analysing it in relation to prior experiences and learning, sensitive to variation in performance, arrangement and presentation
- Enjoy playing a variety of musical instruments and work to perfect their technical skills to a high level of precision and interpretation
- Respond creatively to tasks, producing inventive, pleasing and original work either independently or through productive group collaborations
- Experiment freely with sound, improvise, testing out new styles and types of music, working reflectively
- Enjoy rehearsal and perfecting their performance skills in concert with others
- Compose and adapt music for pleasure
- Think rigorously composers, contexts, instruments, performance and a range of interpretations in set texts
- Enjoy the chance to learn more than one instrument, sing
- Display a keen interest in composition, improvisation or theory beyond the level of classwork
- Prioritise and organise work effectively, communicating well with others to meet objectives
- Are keen to discover more about topics, artists or movements they are studying
- Consider and ask questions about the aesthetic, technical, social, cultural, literary, historical or political context of work
- Create work which is individual, independent and mature relative to their age
Beyond the classroom students:
- Participate in school choirs, bands, groups and orchestras – and start their own groups
- Perform in local festivals and competitions
- Offer leadership within bands, orchestra sections or to younger students
- Enjoy playing regularly with others in the Bath School for Young Musicians ( based at Hayesfield) or in other external groups
- Write reviews of local/school performances for the school newspaper or website
- Enjoy a variety of music using appropriate technology
- Find and enjoy a wide range of local live performance
- Seek out information about music and musicians using the School Librarian’s advice
- Take external grade examinations where appropriate
- Use the internet to find clips of famous performances/performers/conductors or interviews with these – or to track down favourite music and/or learn to play it
