“You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view… until you climb in his skin and walk around in it.”
Harper Lee, To Kill a Mockingbird
We are delighted to announce the theme for this year’s World Book Day- taking place on Thursday 7th of March (Week A) is HGS Read for Empathy.
Increasingly, studies are proving an all important link between reading and developing empathy skills. Put simply, empathy is being able to understand another person’s feelings through trying to see the world just a little through their perspective- putting yourself in their shoes and ‘walking around in them.’
Put even more simply still: empathy defines not only what makes us human, but also our humanity- and reading stories and experiences plays an integral role in this.
So for World Book Day this year, Hayesfield staff and students can come to school in costume as a character:
Whilst costume is not compulsory, last year’s World Book Day was made all the more special and memorable by the range of wonderful costumes donned by students and staff who really entered into the spirit of the day!
On the day, all students and staff should come with a book which, when you were reading it, gave you no choice but to share in the character(s)’ emotions as you saw the world through their eyes. Perhaps the book is something you had thought about, but it was only through reading the character’s story, that you imagined what it might feel like to be in that position. These tend to be the books which move us most and we remember for years to come.
You will be attending your timetabled lessons for that day, but your lesson will have an exciting little bookish twist, based upon the subject and topic you are studying. You do still need to bring with you normal kit and equipment.
Weekly #HGSReadforEmpathy stories will be shared in the Bulletin, along with further guidance for day- so keep checking the Student Bulletin for inspiration!
Riverford Cooking class at Hayesfield Thursday 28th February, Tuesday 12th March and Tuesday 26th March:
We’ve recently joined Riverford’s “Veg Fund” scheme: a fundraising and healthy eating partnership for schools.
Riverford’s local team, Vicki and Alan Mowat, will also be running a series of veg cookery evenings for parents. They’re fun and relaxed cookery workshops (including supper!) which give you chance to meet other parents while being inspired to make the most of seasonal organic vegetables and learning a few veg cookery tips. It’s just £10 for a 2-hour class, supper and a glass of wine – and all proceeds will go to the PTSA. You’ll also have the chance to take a look at Riverford’s vegboxes and it’s an ideal event if you’re thinking about getting a box and would like to find out more.
The workshops will take place in the Hayesfield Brougham Hayes Hall on Thursday 28th February, Tuesday 12th March and Tuesday 26th March from 7-9pm. Buy a ticket for the date of your choice via Scopay. There are only 10 tickets available for each date, so book quickly!
Riverford – the organic vegbox delivery company – will make donations to Hayesfield PTSA for new and existing customers linked to the school. If you start a regular order, Alan and Vicki will donate £25 to the PTSA once you’ve had three deliveries! Just go to www.riverford.co.uk and choose the box you’d like. Quote our school code SCH_BAT_HAYESFIELD when you check out, to make sure that the PTSA receive the donation once you’ve had three deliveries! If you’re already a customer, just contact Alan and Vicki directly at alanandvicki@riverfordhomedelivery.co.uk to tell them that you’re linked to Hayesfield.

Dear Student
Year 11 Reunion & GCSE Certificate Collection –Thursday 13th December 2018
Feedback from previous cohorts indicated that former Year 11 students would have liked an opportunity to meet together to celebrate their GCSE success informally, rather than the traditional Certificate Evening which has been held in the past. We have acted on this feedback to change proceedings for you this year.
It is my pleasure to invite you to join us for a Year 11 Reunion on Thursday 13th December, which will be held from 4.30pm to 5.30pm in the Refectory at the UOP Campus. This is a wonderful opportunity for you to meet up as a year group and celebrate the fantastic GCSE results that you achieved in the summer.
You will be able to collect your GCSE certificates at this event. If you are unable to attend this reunion, you will be able to collect your GCSE certificates from the Upper Oldfield Park Reception during school hours. If you wish to nominate another person to collect your certificates, they will need to bring a form of photo identification (passport or driving licence) and written authorisation from you to collect on your behalf.
We look forward to see you on Thursday 13th December.
Yours sincerely
Mrs J Eaton
I am writing to invite you to my first Open House of the academic year, which will be held on Thursday 6th December 2018 from 5.00pm at our Upper Oldfield Park Campus. This Open House will focus on our Behaviour and Support Policy. You will have an opportunity to look at our draft Behaviour Policy, which is being updated to ensure it is in line with our recent procedural changes, and share your views.
Our Assistant Headteacher (Pastoral Care), Mr Taylor, and Deputy Headteacher (Achievement), Mr White, will join me.
The meeting will be held in a West Wing classroom (W1). If you report to reception for 5.00pm, we will point you in the right direction!
Please ask your child to return the slip to Reception by Monday 3rd December so that we have an idea of numbers.
If you are not able to come to the Open House, I will post the information on our School website so that you can access the key pieces of information. You are then very welcome to contact me if you have any follow-up questions.
Your sincerely
Emma Yates

At Hayesfield, we know that deciding on a career path can be a daunting experience and this is why we work really hard to help our students better understand and support all and every career aspiration from Architect to Zoologist.
To that end, the aim of our second Ignite Day of the year is to provide them with a unique opportunity to develop an understanding of the skills required for employment and the huge range of opportunities and advice available.
In each year, we have a tailored programme that compliments the careers work done in PSHEE. In the earlier years, we will be developing core skills aimed at promoting employability. In later years the Ignite Day experience will link more directly to career pathways and practical advice and support. As part of this, in Y11 students will experience over 30 different careers being represented demonstrating the wide range of opportunities available.
As well as being practical and highly informative, these experience are intended to be hands-on, and enjoyable and above all open us up to new career options and reflect on what we have to offer the world of work. Who knows, today might be the first step into new and exciting careers.
How is Science used in the workplace every day? What skills do employees of STEM careers need? During this day you will get to act as Forensic Technicians, Scientific Authors, Engineers, Designers, Fabric Analysts … a whole host of Scientifically based careers!
You will use practical skills, plan, design, record data, evaluate, think critically and author for different audiences. You will show leadership skills, team work skills, Mathematical skills, independent and imaginative thinking.
By the end of the day you will truly understand the skills that those who work in the STEM industries need and have sampled a range of possible careers that show why working in STEM fields can be so rewarding.
All Year 7 should start the day at the Nucleus Block at Brougham Hayes. Signs will be up as you enter telling you which group you are in and which room you start at.
Any budding Alan Sugars out there? Today you will get to hear from a local successful business person about what it takes to become successful in the world of work. You will have the chance to reflect on your own skills and attributes you can offer employers as well as to what business roles you might be best suited.
Finally, you will get to create your own exciitng start-up company and act out a creative advertising campaign in a Dragon’s Den style presentation to some fiery dragons. We know that this day will be an exciiting and creative way to help you start thinking about what you can offer the world of work as well as what the word of work might be looking for from you.
All Year 8 should start the day at the Brougham Hayes site. Signs will be up as you enter telling you which group you are in and in which room you start.
With your option choices just around the corner, today we will be providing you with a fantastic oppurtunity to learn more about the range of different option subjects available in Year 10.
Subject specialists will be presenting on what each course involves as well as the likely educational and careers pathways and oppurtunites they might open up for you.
In the morning we will link these presentations with activities reviewing potential career paths and employability personal skills profiling. This will give you a clearer idea of the skills and attributes you have to offer the word of work, as well as the wide range of exciting and varied employment options open to you.
By the end of the day, we are sure that you will feel confidnet to make informed option choices and start your pathway to achieving you ambitions.
All Year 9 should start the day at the Brougham Hayes site. Signs will be up as you enter the building telling you which group you are in and in which room you start.
Today all Year 10 are provided with a really fantastic opportunity to complete their Spoken Word unit as part of their English GCSE. This is a really valuable qualification to take to future employers as it will impress them with your verbal skills and confidence in delivering presentations.
Remember that we will be completing this qualification in one day, so you must come fully prepared- all research completed and a clear idea of how you want to set out your speech. For some of you this is a chance to show your confidence and verbal flair; for others this is a great opportunity to show what you are made of and how capably you step out of your comfort zone and meet the challenge of the task.
Remember as well that as part of the final assessment you will need to answer questions from your audience. That means you should choose a topic about which you certainly know something about and about which you feel passionate.
All Year 10 will be located in the rooms below at Upper Oldfield Park for the day.
Today is a really exciting and highly useful part of your careers programme at Hayesfield. We are very lucky that you will be able to access to a wide range of professions both local and national whose experience and knowledge will help develop your understanding of available career opportunities.
In the afternoon you will take part in a formal mock interview which will provide you with really valuable interview experience and feedback. We are very thankful to the large number of employers who support this day and their local school and we know that it will provide highly relevant and useful advice on how to continue your pathway to achieving your ambitions.
All Year 11 should start the day at the Upper Oldfield Park site. Signs will be up as you enter telling you in which room you start.
As part of the formal mock interview experience, Year 11 students are encouraged to wear smart business dress. Please talk with your tutor if you are unsure what that should mean. Where this is an issue, students are welcome to wear their school uniform. Any student not appropriately dressed will be required to change into one of the School’s spare uniforms.

An invite and further details about this event will be heading home to all our Year 7 families. All Year 7 students are expected to take part and be involved in this joyful occasion
The Secondary School Performance Tables for 2018 went live today and we are delighted to see Hayesfield placed ‘Number One’ in Bath and North East Somerset (BANES). We have a Progress 8 score of +0.73, are placed 182 out of 6530 schools nationally – that is the top 3% of schools in England.

We are particularly proud to see students of all abilities and backgrounds making exceptional progress at our School.
Congratulations once again to all our students and staff who worked together to achieve another spectacular set of exam results. Ambitions achieved!
