Inter School Spelling Bee

June 25, 2019

28th June at 4:15pm in the Roper Theatre, Upper Oldfield Park Campus
Sponsored by Mr B’s Book Emporium

We are delighted to hold the second annual Hayesfield Inter-School Spelling Bee on the 28th June at 4:15pm in the Roper Theatre at Hayesfield Girls’ School. This exciting competition will see 21 students from across seven schools in Bath including: Beechen Cliff, King Edward’s, Oldfield, Ralph Allen, St Gregory’s, St Mark’s and of course, Hayesfield battle it out to be crowned Bath Inter-Schools’ Spelling Bee Champion.

The Spelling Bee will be the same format as the Hayesfield House Spelling Bee, consisting of three rounds of spellings increasing in difficulty in each round. The tension was palpable in the finals of the House competition in April, where Nia Mulhern finally took the crown as the overall high scorer, with Emily and Beth Hemborough as runners up.

The competition will be tense and we would appreciate it if you could come and support our girls as they compete against students from other schools. Please arrive at the Roper Theatre for 4:15pm and enjoy the show!

Campaign to raise awareness of Climate Change

Dear Parent/Carer

Campaign to raise awareness of Climate Change

I am writing to update you and your son/daughter with our plans of how we will support our students to have their concerns heard about Climate Change on Friday.

Firstly, we will support Mia Rumble’s (8PL) request to remove all drinks in plastic bottles from sale on Friday. Students will be able to access fresh water from our fountains and will still be able to purchase juice in cartons. Mia’s idea encourages us to reduce our impact on plastic waste and help the planet. Please make sure your son or daughter leaves home with their water bottle!

Secondly, the School Eco-Council has worked with staff to put the following arrangements in place:

  • Every tutor group tomorrow morning will discuss the issues of climate change, to share their individual views on the extent of which this is impacting on our earth and the extinction of species over the last 20 years
  • All students will have the opportunity to create their own environmental pledge. We will display these as a whole school presentation on our Hayesfield Display of Pledges
  • At lunchtime, we will be showing a film called Earth Underwater in the Brougham Hayes Gym and the UOP Hall. We recommend that students bring a packed lunch (no cling film) to be able to watch the whole movie
  • Finally, we will host a peaceful demonstration at lunchtime for students who wish to express their concerns about climate change, by holding a ‘Lie Down’at 1.00pm. This will be part of our ‘Hayesfield makes a Statement!’ campaign. Students who wish to make a statement about the earth and species dying are invited to attend. These ‘Lie Downs’ will be held on the
Upper Oldfield Park astro and the Brougham Hayes field

I am really proud to share our students’ ideas with you – they never fail to impress me with their passion and creativity. I look forward to showing you the photographs and student comments in the Bulletin on Friday afternoon.

Yours sincerely

Dear Parent/Career

RE: Parent Survey on the School’s Reporting Process

We are currently reviewing our reporting procedures to make sure that we are providing the most useful data to parents and at the most relevant times in the school year.

As part of this review, we are asking parents to offer their own thoughts and feedback on what information in the School reports they find the most useful in helping understanding their child’s progress and the necessary areas to improve upon.
Can we please ask that parents take a few minutes to read the information on the next page which explains what we currently provide in each Year Group then complete the online survey. This information will be used to help inform our reporting model for 2019-20. This survey will be available until Monday 13th May.
There are three surveys- one for each key stage. Please complete the survey(s) relevant to your child or children. These are hyperlinked below and should only take a few minutes.

  • Lower School Reporting Parent Survey (Years 7 to 9)
  • Upper School Reporting Parent Survey (Years 10 and 11)
  • Sixth Form Reporting Parent Survey (Years 12 and 13)

As a follow up to this survey, we will be hosting an additional Headteacher’s Open House on Thursday 16th May where parents will be able to talk directly with the Senior Leadership Team about the reporting process and any changes they may wish to suggest. All are welcome from 5.00 – 6.00pm at the Upper Oldfield Park Campus.

If you have any question regarding this survey, please feel free to contact me directly via email d.powell@hayesfield.com.

Yours sincerely

Duncan Powell
Deputy Headteacher (Curriculum)
