Gifted and Talented students in Science:
- Grasp content more quickly and at an earlier age than their peers
- Enjoy abstract, conceptual work
- Demonstrate excellent levels of skill and technique when doing practicals
- Often skip steps when solving problems: use an unexpected or alternative method
- Experiment with and compare different methods
- Will tackle problems abstractly, without concrete aids
- Look at patterns and relationships and can explain them
- Can concentrate for a long time on a problem
- Need to work to a solution – and find it satisfying once it is reached
- Have exceptional mathematical reasoning, ability and memory
- Are capable of independent self?directed activities
- Are interested statistics and use of scientific data in news stories
- Enjoy maths puzzles, games, including chess and Minecraft
Beyond the classroom students:
- Enjoy science activities offered through period six such as HOGS and Minecraft
- Ask the School Librarian for interesting books on science, follow up science stories in the news or topics prompted by lesson subjects including relevant journals via University catalogues and appropriate websites with the guidance of the School Librarian.
- Enjoy Sudoku and other number puzzles in newspapers
- Watch science lectures online via the Khan Academy
- Watch Horizon and other science related TV programmes, seek out iPlayer and podcast television and BBC Radio Four broadcasts
- Enjoy films on general release with strong science topics and ask questions about these.
- Explore links to other subjects including music, economics, physics and ICT
- Seek out and read magazines such as ‘New Scientist’ and ‘The Lancet’ regularly
- Attend external science events such as those offered by BRSLI
- Participate in externally led science competitions such as the Lego competition, rocket competition, Salters Science Fair and Mission to Mars
- Enter displays and experiments for the Hayesfield Science Fair
- Attend the talks given in the Nucleus by external speakers
