After our study on the brilliant and moving poetry of WWI, the History department ran a competition to find our own war poets. Well done to all the entries, the History department had a wonderful time reading your poems. The standard was so high, we decided to add an extra winning category of specially commended poems. Last year parents, students and staff donated books to local Bath charity Earthchild as much needed resources for a school for Tibetan refugees in northern India that they support. The response was fantastic and these are pictures of the children using and enjoying everything you so kindly donated. There is also a message of thanks from the EarthChild Charity.
Miss Trueman

We have recently returned from India where we saw the consignment of books, including those donated by Hayesfield students, arrive.
It was wonderful to see the wonder and delight on the faces of the pupils.
We can only thank you on their behalf for your care and compassion.
Who knows what 2012 will bring but perhaps we can work together again to improve the lives of these delightful Tibetan refugee and orphan children?
Thank you for all that you and your students do for Earthchild and perhaps you can share the photos with everyone who helped so much.

2011 saw a range of exciting international events at Hayesfield and there are many more to look forward to in 2012. Only this week Mrs Banks will be launching an enterprise competition for the Sixth Form this week with a view to raising money for a toilet twinning project hopefully with a school in Burundi.
Selected classes of Y8 students will continue to work this year on their e/penpal twinning projects in languages lessons. These projects aim to enhance students’ linguistic and cultural development as part of the curriculum through peer exchange of letters, email, chat on etwinning, skype link and short film. The contact seeks to apply language learning in an authentic written or spoken context, to increase motivation for language learning and communication, to provide extra currency and real life meaning, context and audience and to enhance openness to people of other cultures.
In February a new group of Y10 and Y12s from Hayesfield and Beechen Cliff will be off to Germany again on the Berlin Exchange. This year is a particularly significant year for the exchange because it will celebrate its 15th anniversary. We are very pleased to have so much Y12 interest in work experience again as well and look forward to the curriculum impact this trip will have. Within the curriculum areas of languages and history, students will directly apply their newly acquired knowledge, research, skills and attitudes and share them with peers and teachers in the form of written and spoken work in German and formal class presentations in history. The exchange trip also aims to develop students’ linguistic, cultural and historical awareness through exploration and exchange as well as developing mutual understanding. Many former students have developed lifelong friendships over the years and every year the group in question feed back to subsequent Y9+10 groups through assemblies about their experiences, impressions and their impact. The German exchange students are expected to visit Bath in October this year.
March promises to be a very busy month indeed in terms of international activities. A group of Y10 and Y12 students will visit the Belgian battlefields on the Battlefields Trip to deepen their historical understanding of WWI. This visit links directly with the GCSE and AS history curriculum and forms an important part of learning about events surrounding WWI. March will see the arrival of the very first French Exchange party from Montpellier in Bath. The language skills practised by Y10 students from Hayesfield and Beechen Cliff in an authentic environment in October last year will be extremely valuable for students in the preparation of their first real Controlled Assessment in French. The linguistic and cultural awareness will take on a new dimension, however, as students will now reciprocate the hospitality they received in France but in their home environment. This year’s group will also help to promote this trip for October 2012 through a presentation in Y9 assembly. March will also see two very important events for two core subjects. World Maths Day seeks to promote maths as an international language. Students enter online maths challenges with students in other countries using mymaths website. World Book Day – Promoting International Literature kicks off with World Book Day, World Poetry Day and International Children's Book Day and offers collaborative readings from a range of international literature to broaden students' experiences of international literature. Student book groups will focus on a non-British author and International Baccalaureate students will lead readings from a range of international poetry. In English lessons students will research and evaluate the work of a range of international poets and authors. Watch this space for more information on both of these projects. And last but not least in this action packed month is a Sixth Form event where teams of students prepare for participation in a Model United Nations competition. The event will take place at Bristol Grammar School and having researched an issue in global politics from the perspective of their allocated nation, students will participate in formal debate on the issues at hand. Please see Mrs Bevan for more information.
In June, in an ongoing LEA-wide project entitled BSEP China, a group of Chinese students from Suzhou will visit Bath and stay with host families in the local area. If you are interested in hosting a Chinese student please contact Miss Trueman. The aims of this project are to develop links with the UK and China and to develop a sense of global citizenship through cross-curricular cultural and linguistic exchange. Around this time we will again make our voice heard this year in the Global Campaign for Education – Send My Friend to School, calling on world leaders to keep their promise and provide education for all children around the world by 2015. The aims of this project are to raise awareness of the fundamental right to education and the opportunities learning and access to qualifications can bring and the fact that many children are still denied this right, to develop understanding of life on another continent and to enhance student leadership on this topic. If you are interested in getting actively involved in this project beyond your tutor group, look out for the posters around the school in late May. Last year we received a letter from Don Foster MP congratulating us on our efforts. Maybe this year we will invite him into school to get his photo taken and to personally collect our letters to take to the House of Commons!
July will see the much anticipated Global Citizen Day based on Olympic Values. If you are interested in getting involved in a leadership role for this event please see Mrs Hodkinson or Ms Shail. This cross curricular project aims to involve all faculties, raise awareness of the Olympic values (friendship, respect, excellence, determination, inspiration, courage and equality), to promote sport and fitness for all, to raise the profile of global citizenship, overcome national barriers and prejudices and raise profile of participating countries as well as to continue to further develop student interest in global collaboration across partner schools. July will hopefully also see the return of the popular project Primary Language Links. This collaboration project between our school and local primary schools includes staff, Y9 students interested in a primary language teaching experience and large numbers of Y5s all keen to participate in a carousel of language and culture taster lesson in a secondary school setting. If you are in Y9 and interested in getting involved please speak to Señora Cordero. Extension Week will, of course, also have an international flavour with no less than Y7, Y8 and Y9 venturing to Spain, France and Germany respectively. These trips aim to offer students a brief insight into another culture and for those students who study the language in question, an opportunity to practise those all important language skills in an authentic situation. Another important international aspect of Extention Week is the Mandarin Chinese Cross Curricular Day for Y9 students, which links language, art, food technology and sport/well being. This will be in its fourth year and is particularly exciting since we are hoping that Mandarin Chinese may move into the mainstream curriculum in September this year.
Please do let us know if you have any other ideas for international events you would like us to try out at Hayesfield or other ways in which you might like to get involved!

This year’s dates have been turned on their head slightly and whereas we normally welcome the German party in autumn or early winter, the German exchange partners visited earlier in the spring instead this year. Eight Year 11 Hayesfield students will now join Beechen Cliff students and have the hospitality of their families repaid on their trip to one of the most vibrant capital cities in Europe.
The eight Year 11 students will spend time in linguistic and cultural exchange with their host families and in a local school, alongside several mornings of intensive German lessons as well as soaking up the sights on a variety of exciting day trips. This year’s programme will again contain a cross curricular element since so many of the students involved are also studying GCSE history, indeed one historian on the group will be reactivating her KS3 German especially for this trip!
The German students really enjoyed their time in Bath and are excited about seeing their English friends again! Many thanks to all the families involved.

Merci Madame Lister !

Well done to all 12 acts who performed last night to a full house in the 2011 Hayesfield's Got Talent house competition. All 12 acts were fantastic and the judges had a tough decision to find the winner.
Congratualtions to Ruby Osborne in 10 Blackwell who the judges choose as the winning act. She has been offered a slot on stage next year in the Bath Gang Show as a guest performer as well as winning a engraved trophy.

JOY is a twenty strong Hayesfield Christmas caroling group made up of all ages which collects for charities each Christmas. As well singing door to door in Oldfield Park and Poets Corner in the days leading up to Christmas, it also sings carols at company Christmas dinners, events and parties. IPL has commissioned the group to sing for the last three years. This year the group is raising money for the William Budd Oncology Ward at the Royal United Hospital as part of the ‘Forever Friends’ Appeal. A sample of their music is available to hear.
If anyone would like the group to sing for their Christmas event and donate money to a very good cause, please contact Jo Howard-Mccombe in Year 13 via the school.
On Monday 17th October, we took part in the first stage of a school's Bouldering Competition at TCA, the climbing academy in Bristol. There are four rounds throughout the year. Each round has fifteen problems in which you make your way up or across the bouldering wall. Each hold on the wall has a score by it so the further you go along the more points you get. At the end of this competition we were fourth out of eight. We found it difficult starting sitting down so that's what we need to work on for next time. We are looking forward to the next round as we really enjoyed it!
By Rosa Digby, Grace Holden and Megan Fortune (Year 8)

If you would like to find out more about learning to climb at the TCA look out for the posters on the PE boards, speak to the girls above or take part in the taster sessions held every Friday from 5.00pm to 6.00pm at the TCA Bristol (BS5 OFD), aimed at 8 to 16 year olds. For more information please see their website www.theclimbingacademy.com

Congratulations to the 49 students, 22 from Hayesfield, who took part in the latest training weekend on Dartmoor. They continued their Duke of Edinburgh expedition training, walking, navigating and two nights camping. They carried full packs and experienced the full range of Dartmoor weather, from sun and good visibility, to heavy rain, mist and low cloud. These conditions were certainly very challenging, testing their skills to the maximum. The weekend was a steep learning curve for all students and will stand them in good stead for their assessment in the spring.
Through the winter months the students will be continuing with their training independently, as well as completing their skill, physical recreation and volunteering elements of the students will meet once a week with staff to report on their progress.
A big thank you to the staff of both schools for giving up their time.

Year 9 students met the Duchess of Cornwall for the launch of the Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy's Anthologise education project at a school in London. The duchess was involved with the event because she has a keen interest in literacy, being the patron of both the National Literacy Trust and the Wicked Young Writer's Award.

They were joined by students from six other schools from across the country.
Anthologise has been devised by Carol Ann Duffy to increase the profile of poetry in UK schools and is a competition to encourage students to compile their own anthology of poetry, with the winning entry being published.
Please visit http://hayesfield.co.uk/amywilliams.asp for the full report.
