Mobile Phones
Students may bring a mobile phone to School but as soon as they enter the building they should switch it off. We will provide a secure pouch to every student and they will be expected to place their switched off phone along with any smart watches into the pouch in Tutor Time and lock it shut.
Following the release of the Government’s statutory guidance on mobile phones, all secondary schools within the MNSP Trust are adopting the Mobile Phones Acceptable Use Policy.
From the start of September 2026, all students in Years 7 to 11 will no longer be permitted to use or access mobile phones at any point during the school day. To facilitate this, every student who brings a phone to school will be issued a secure, padded Yondr pouch. These pouches temporarily block all signals, calls, and notifications. This policy applies to all mobile phones (smartphones and basic models) as well as any devices that are able to access the internet and are not controlled within the school network (eg; Apple Watches).
Daily Routine
Students will receive their named pouch on their first day back in September. They will keep this same pouch throughout their time at Hayesfield until the end of Year 11.
- Arrival to school: Students unlock their empty pouch at an unlocking station near any of the school entrances, place their phone inside, and head to their Tutor base.
- Tutor Time: Students ensure their phone is switched off, lock the pouch shut, and place it in their school bag. It must remain locked in their bag throughout the day.
- Dismissal: As they leave school, students tap their pouch on the unlocking magnets near the exits to retrieve their phone. They should then re-lock the empty pouch and place it in their bag, ready for the next day.
Frequently Asked Questions
What happens if I need my phone to monitor my blood sugar levels?
If you need your phone for any medical monitoring then your parents need to complete the Google Form and we will ensure your Individual Healthcare Plan is updated and you will be issued with an accessible velcro pouch.
What happens if I forget my pouch?
You will need to hand your phone into Reception and it will be stored securely ready for you to collect at the end of the school day. If you have lost your pouch, you will need to purchase a replacement on Arbor (£14).
What happens if I need to call my parents or send them a message?
Report to Reception during break or lunchtime and they will help by either sending an email to your parents or you will be able to give them a call.
What happens if I feel unwell during the day?
Go to reception or Pastoral and they will look after you and can contact parents if required.
Can I unlock my phone and use it if I am walking between sites for LEAP?
Yes, because you are off site at the end of the school day you can unlock your pouch and use your phone. However, you must lock it back in the pouch once you step onto the other site as you are taking part in a school activity.
What happens if I need to leave school for an appointment and won’t be coming back to school?
Once you sign out as you are being collected, you can unlock your pouch using the magnet on Reception.
What if I am on a school trip during the school day?
You will lock your phone in the pouch when you arrive in school and unlock it when you get back to school. If there is a delay the staff will ensure school email all parents of students on the trip. If the trip arrives after school is closed the staff will have access to an unlocking magnet.
I have a phone that does not connect to the internet, do I need to put it in a pouch?
Yes, as it is a communication device and can cause distraction or be used inappropriately, it must be locked in a pouch during the school day.
What happens if I am late to school and miss tutor?
You will sign in at Reception and lock your phone in the pouch before you go to lessons.
What happens if I don’t bring a phone to school?
Your parents should complete the Google Form and you will not be issued with a pouch – if you decide to bring a phone to school your parents need to inform the school and we will issue you with a pouch.
I forgot I had brought my phone to school and it started ringing during a lesson?
Any phones seen or heard during the day will be confiscated and must be collected by a parent or carer after school finishes. Check every morning and make sure you lock it in a pouch.
I have just got home and realised I forgot to unlock my phone when I left school, what can I do?
Either wait until the next day or you can go to the main BH Campus entrance and the lockbox on the outside wall will be left open all night and all weekend.
Can I decorate my pouch?
It is school property and we want to pass pouches onto the next Year group when you finish Year 11 so we ask that you do not decorate the pouch – you could add a key ring, etc but nothing that can not be removed easily.
What happens if my pouch is damaged?
If your pouch is damaged or not looked after then your parents could be asked to pay for a new pouch.
My phone was confiscated but my Mum can’t pick it up from school until tomorrow, what can I do?
The phone will be securely stored in Reception until a parent or carer can collect it. It is important you follow the policy!
