#### Assessment in Lower School Mathematics

Mathematics assessments are in the form of written papers taking no more than 1 hour each. These assessments take place in Maths lessons at the end of Term 1, 2, 3 and 4 and focus on the topics covered during that term. At the end of each year there is a final assessment on the topics studied across the whole year. 50% of a student’s final grade for the year is made up from the average of her termly assessments, with the other 50% made from their final end of year assessment in Term 6. All assessments are a mixture of both calculator and non-calculator questions depending on the content.

#### Overview of Assessment from Mathematics Assessment Policy

#### Marking of Students’ Work and Feedback

Student books are taken in by the class teacher at least three times per term (based on a standard 6 week term).

Feed-forward (pink) sheets are used as part of the book marking process at the end of each unit. Typically, two of these should be used each term.

Assessment feedback (blue) sheets are used as part of the assessment marking process at the end of each term. Staff comments on both the pink and blue sheets provide guidance on how students can improve their level of understanding. Staff review all peer assessed and self-assessed work and provide guidance when necessary.

Marking guidance is included as part of the tracking sheet at the front of every student book. This sheet will include the following information:

#### Setting in Lower School Maths

Sets are arranged in two half year groups (termed left and right). In Year 7 the left and right sides are set 1 to 4. In Year 8 the left side is set 1 to 3 and the right side from 1 to 5. Students are assigned to sets initially by Key Stage 2 Maths results. When a student out-performs the bottom 10% of students in the set above across a minimum of two assessments she will be moved to the higher group. If a student performs below the top 10% of students in the set below across a minimum of two assessments, then she will be moved to the lower group.

Sets 1 and 2 follow the extension curriculum, Set 3 follows the core curriculum and Set 4 in Year 7, Set 5 in Year 8 follow the support curriculum.

#### Homework

Mathematics homework is set on a weekly basis and students should expect to spend approximately 1 hour on each homework. Students will record homework in their planners and teachers share via SIMS Learning Gateway the details of what has been set and when it is due to be handed in.

#### Supporting Your Daughter in Lower School Mathematics

**There are a number of ways you can support your daughter with her maths:**

- Always pay a keen interest in what she is doing in her Maths lessons
- Always ask to see her completed homework
- Do not let your own fears over the subject be a reason for your daughter not learning to like the subject
- Ask her to explain the most recent topic she has covered in Maths to you
- Give a lot of praise for the maths that she does – confidence is a big problem for some students in maths
- A key resource we use is Mathswatch VLE. It is available at home and contains readily accessible videos. Use revision lists that are issued to students to work through this maths together Why not try the linked worksheets too?
