Year 10 End of Year Exams – 6th to 24th June 2022

May 18, 2022

As we near the end of Year 10, it is important that we start to prepare our students for their GCSE exams by providing opportunities for formal assessments in exam conditions. From Monday 6th June, students will be completing assessments in most of their subjects.

Whilst most of these will be completed in class time, we are also providing the opportunity for a formal Sports Hall exam experience in some subjects. This will mirror the reality of the GCSE exams next summer so that they can get used to sitting exams in this space.

These opportunities to sit exams in a formal examination space will enable students to develop:

  • Strategies to cope with an exam situation and develop their exam technique
  • Skills to manage their time effectively in the exam
  • Successful revision strategies
  • Confidence in future exams

Please note that morning start times will be confirmed in due course, but we expect all students to be in school at 8:30am on days where they have morning exams and should expect to finish at 3:15pm for afternoon sessions.
Teachers will share topic lists and Personal Learning Checklists so that she knows where to focus her revision. There is also an Exam Support Booklet with lots of useful information and support to help guide revision, as well as a list of the equipment needed for each exam.

Magistrate Mock Trial LEAP

Congratulations to my fantastic group of budding lawyers, future solicitors, and potential barristers. I am so incredibly proud of your performance during our recent competition. Since September, you have astonished me with your enthusiasm, commitment, and moral courage by becoming defenders of justice and upholders of truth. Your professionalism and maturity on the day was highly commendable and you certainly did Hayesfield proud. It has been such a rewarding experience getting to know each of you.

Ms Curran
Teacher of English

I loved being part of the Magistrate Mock Trial LEAP. It was such a fun opportunity to see into the world of Law and I’m really glad that I took part in this experience. My role was as a defence witness and I had to answer a range of questions to the best of my ability. I also got to meet new people of different year groups and have lots of fun whilst putting together a case to present. I thoroughly enjoyed doing this and working as a team. I would really recommend doing this leap if you are curious to experience what following a career in Law would be like.

Ayla (8ER)

Hello, I am Isla, and I extremely enjoyed taking part in the Magistrate's Mock Trial, as a magistrate. This was a really fun experience and a fantastic opportunity as I was able to make many new friends and see a bit of what the world Law is like. It was an amazing chance to compete against other schools and show off all our hard work. As a magistrate, it is our duty to decide the verdict of the trial, either guilty or innocent. We had to take down notes and have a discussion between the other magistrates to finalise the verdict.

Isla (8EL)

Hi, I'm Amelie and I was court reporter for the Magistrate's Mock Trial competition. I thoroughly enjoyed doing this LEAP because it gave us all a chance to know what it feels like to be in a real court, and I feel like this gives us a head start if we ever want to be lawyers or any other members of the court. I would definitely recommend this LEAP for people who are interested in Law or Politics as you learn a lot and it is a very fun experience.

Amelie (8AR)

My name is Ella, I am in Year 10, and I was the legal adviser for the prosecution team. My job was to summarise the main evidence and issues with the case in a speech after both the prosecution and defence have provided their case. My role was to summarise the case for the magistrates because my speech was the last thing they heard before making their verdict. As legal adviser, I had to be non-biased and talk about the key evidence of the case without making an opinion. It was a really fun event to take part in and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was exciting competing against other students who also were interest in law, and I now have a better insight into what being a lawyer is about. I am very grateful for this opportunity and am glad I took part.

Ella (10PL)

Hi I’m lanna and I was a witness in our Magistrates Competition. My name was Chris Patel and I was on the Prosecution team. In our LEAP sessions, I have been practicing my role by our lawyers asking me questions and repeating this process. I have enjoyed playing my role and I have made many new friends who I am happily able to help in any subject. It has helped me understand Law as a profession and what it might be like when I decide to take this career branch. During my cross-examination the Lawyer interviewing me embodied Elle Woods which I thoroughly enjoyed, it even made me giggle.

Ianna (10EL)

In Magistrates, I played defence lawyer 2 and it was a really fun role to do as my job was to ask questions to my defence witness and cross-examine the prosecution team witness, trying to prove that the defendant Alex Davies was innocent. It also really helped me to understand the process of the legal profession and understand what their day-to-day jobs can be like. Taking part in the competition was such a fun day and it was a great opportunity to go against different schools and present our case to them.

Becky (10PL)

I was playing the defendant Alex Davies in the Magistrates Mock Trial. This was a really fun role as I was the only one being put on trial. As part of this LEAP and being a witness, you really have to get in the character for your role, so witnesses act like their person and lawyers have to act really professional. The competition was a really fun way to expand my skills and an overall fun day. I would thoroughly recommend this LEAP.

Isabel (8ER)

I'm Martha and I was a prosecution lawyer in the magistrates competition this year.  It was a tricky case that everyone had to work hard at to be ready for the competition! Everyone worked so hard this term and because of that it was a nice atmosphere. I'm really proud of everyone in the club and I'm sure they'll be amazing again next year!!

Year 9 Assessments

May 05, 2022

As you are aware, our Year 9 students will be sitting assessments in Terms 5 and Term 6. The vast majority of these assessments will happen during lesson time in their classrooms, as all of their assessments in school have been up until now. However, during the week commencing 16th May 2022 they will have three formal assessments in exam conditions in the school hall. These assessments will be in the core subjects of English, Maths and Science. We are doing these three assessments in this way to begin building up the confidence and skills needed to take on GCSE exams.

We have now collated all of the information about Year 9 assessments in Terms 5 and Term 6 and are able to share the below overview with you. The formal examinations have been highlighted.
Please be aware that in many subjects in-class assessments are happening on different days for different tutor groups so you should only refer to the ones relevant to your daughter’s tutor group.

All assessments will be on topics that students have already studied this year. Teachers will be very clear about the format and success criteria to ensure that every student is set up to be as successful as possible. Teachers have been asked to set revision tasks for homework and all of Year 9 have attended an assembly about what to expect in formal examinations and healthy, effective revision strategies. It was made clear to the year group in this assembly that Year 9 assessments are simply about doing their best, showing off what they can do, and starting to find out what revision strategies work for them as individuals.

We are immensely proud of what Year 9 have achieved so far this year and know they will all continue striving to do their best. If you have any questions about this information, please do not hesitate to get in contact e.egan@hayesfield.com.

Kind regards

Miss E Egan

School Closure Notice – Storm Eunice

17th February 2022

Dear Parents and Carers

SCHOOL CLOSURE NOTIFICATION – STORM EUNICE

Following discussions with a number of different agencies and the forecasted poor weather conditions, I have taken the decision that all Secondary Schools in the Midsomer Norton Schools’ Partnership Trust will be closed to staff and students on Friday 18th February 2022.
Some of the schools are located in the ‘red’ warning area, specified by the MET Office. A number of other schools are located on the fringe of the ‘red’ warning zone and as such, we cannot guarantee the safety of children, parents or staff on school sites. In addition, members of staff may not be able to travel to and from work safely.

Where possible, schools will be operating virtual learning systems and children should continue to work from home. Details of the arrangements for this will come directly from your child’s school.

I appreciate this decision may be unpopular with some parents and carers. However, I have taken the decision as early as possible to enable parents and carers to make plans and avoid last minute disruption first thing in the morning.

Kind regards

Alun Williams
CEO

In order to access remote learning, students should check both their School email accounts for links to live lessons as well as their SIMS Homework app for any additional set work.

Please contact your relevant Director of Achievement if there are any issues.

World Book Day, Thursday 3rd March 2022

February 17, 2022
by Admin

Hayesfield does World Book Day- our staff do it, our students do it…We simply love it! Each year, we have a themed World Book Day- to encourage stories to be shared and reading to be celebrated; this year is no different!

The theme: Read Like A…

We all know reading is relevant in all subjects and all careers, and for each and every subject, there’s an inspirational story that links in with that subject waiting to be enjoyed. On World Book Day this year we will be celebrating the stories that explore different subjects, from Journey to the River Sea and Exodus for Geography, to Sweet Sorrow for Drama, through to We are all made of Molecules and Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy for Science. You can suggest some of your favourite fictional reads; the aim here is to come up with a fictional subject reading list, so if you’re a history keen bean for example, you have a list of fictional books where history is explored at your fingertips- perfect!

Key details

Date: Thursday 3rd March, Week B

Is it full costume for all years?

Yes. Come as character in a book who represents something you are passionate about/admire/can learn something from or links with your favourite subject. You have lots of freedom to decide, but you do need to explain why you have come as the character and how you decided on your costume.
Is costume compulsory? No, costume is not compulsory, but if you do not come in costume, you must be in normal uniform. This is not a non-uniform day.

What about characters who have ‘normal’ clothes?

Your costume must clearly be a costume. If the character wears ‘normal’ clothing, you must find a way (be creative) of making it clear it is a costume- I.e., something to represent the themes of the book, key quotations, accessories that represent the character’s personality.
Students, your costume is your responsibility. Be as creative as you can be, share your ideas and encourage each other.
Bring the book your character features in.

I have Sport/Dance on that day, can I still come in costume?

Yes, but it is worth coming in something you can change easily in and out of. Make sure you do not forget your sports kit or footwear for your lesson on that day.

Are there prizes for costume?

YES. For the best costumes, the Tutor Group in each Year Group with most students in creative costumes, the best staff costume…. (This is not a definitive list, very keen to give lots of House Points out for sharing the reading love!)

Can I paint my face as part of the costume?

Yes, but whatever you do must be temporary, lasting for World Book Day and World Book Day only.

Are there some exciting activities on the day?

Yes! Discovery event in the Book-Eyrie running during lunch, Drop Everything And Read time, a photo booth for group pics, various competitions.

Overall

Days like World Book Day are about enjoyment and making memories. Although we still did World Book Day during lockdown (and dressed up!), being able to mark this together again is precious. Start planning your costume and get involved, celebrate reading and have fun!
