In Years 10 & 11 most pupils are given the opportunity to choose activities from three different option pathways in Core PE. The objective is that students develop skills in their preferred activity areas and are directed to community clubs where they are able to continue in their chosen fields post- 16. Upper School students also have the opportunity to use the fitness suite to develop their fitness and understanding of training principles and methods.
Course Content
Years 10 & 11 have 1 double lesson per fortnight. All classes are mixed ability and follow an option pathway:
- Aesthetic Pathway – Dance, Cheerleading, Fitness Gym, Yoga
- Netball
- Sports Hall Games – Basketball, Badminton, Volleyball
- Astro Games – Tag Rugby, Football, Lacrosse
Year 11 have 1 double lesson per fortnight. All classes are mixed ability and follow an option pathway:
In the Summer terms all students can will have the opportunity to take part in Athletics, Striking and Fielding and Tennis activities.
Option block ‘E’ has enabled Upper School students to opt for 1 additional PE lesson per fortnight. Opportunities to go off site and to complete additional activities including working with external agencies including the Bath Rugby Foundation.
Subject Specific Skills
In Upper School Core PE lessons, students are expected to demonstrate a range of skills across all activities including the following core skills, which can be adapted across activities:
- Attacking principles
- Defending principles
- Performing to maximal levels
- The application of skills into games/performances
- Outwitting opponents through tactical strategies
- Understanding the rules and concepts of activities
- Applying fitness techniques and the principles of training and planning for a healthy, balanced lifestyle
- Appreciating performances through peer and self-evaluation
Assessment in Core PE
In reporting for Core PE the PE Department only issue effort grades. This is done to encourage participation and a sense of overall enjoyment.

Homework
Due to the nature of the subject, the PE Department sets fewer written tasks but we strongly support and expect attendance at Period 6 LEAP activities.
Supporting Your Daughter in Lower School PE
- Encourage attendance to the Period 6 LEAP sporting activities
- Making sure that your daughter has the correct kit and equipment for her lessons, particularly mouth guards and shin pads
- Share your sporting enthusiasm with your daughter
- Encourage healthy eating and an active lifestyle
- Should their ever be an injury or illness limiting participation, support your daughter in taking on a coaching or officiating role in lessons
- Keep in communication with the PE department via the school bulletin and your daughters planner
