Hayesfield prides itself on being an environment where everyone’s voice is heard and there are roles and responsibilities for students to ensure that they make a difference in the day to day life of the school and the wider community.
Irrespective of the year group, within each tutor group, students have the opportunity to take on board a role of responsibility; there are two students who fulfil each role per tutor group. It may be that your impact is as a Tutor Group representative on the Year Group Council, or as a House representative that will engage with the Heads of House; possibly as a Sports representative generating teams for competitions or even as a Climate Committee member making the school more sustainable. There are roles as a Reading Representative, which can lead on to being a Bookeyrie Fledgling, or maybe you would prefer to be a House Point Coordinator or Student Ambassador, leading visitors and meeting guests. These roles exist in every tutor group in every year, resulting in 784 leadership positions before we contemplate Year 7 Buddies, Prefects and members of 6SLT; Your voice, your school;
Key to the success of student leadership is the positive relationships created between students and staff where ideas are generated and there is an opportunity to lead events, support charities, raise awareness and drive change for the benefit of all at Hayesfield and beyond. Students can liaise with their Tutor or the Assistant Head (Character Development) to find out more information.
Sixth Form Student Leadership Team (6SLT)
6SLT is the Senior Leadership Team within the 6th Form that are responsible for chairing meetings, engaging the community within and beyond Hayesfield, driving the Climate Committee, arranging and organising events and supporting school activities beyond normal school hours. Students apply and are interviewed for specific roles and the team is then appointed for the duration of Year 13, ensuring dynamism and a lasting legacy; 6SLT work closely with the school’s Senior Leadership Team.
Sixth Form Prefects are a vital part of student leadership, working alongside 6SLT and staff to ensure the success of events and initiatives, such as the student supported reading programme and lunchtime activity room rotas.

School Council – Our Impact
The School Council meets every other week with the intent of ensuring student voice and student action. Two students from each year group council make up the group with the meetings being chaired by the Head Student who works in conjunction with the Assistant Head (Character Development). With a variety of projects being undertaken, the Council members bring items and ideas from their specific year groups which are discussed, with actions being agreed and staff engagement and commitment being vital. New Council members are voted in each year.
Recent projects
- Increased recycling on both sites
- Discussions with catering staff re menus and sourcing of ingredients
- Improvement of washroom areas
- Increased number of House and Year Group competitions
- House logos
- More social events with our Hub partners of St Marks’ and Beechen Cliff Schools
In addition to this, each year group possesses a council that meets on a fortnightly basis to discuss matters that are relevant and pertinent to them specifically, as well as generating items that their representatives can bring to the School Council. These meetings are chaired by a member of 6SLT and are delivered in conjunction with the Director of Achievement and Pastoral Manager for each year group to ensure that student voice and impact is a reality. These council members are voted in by their Tutor Groups and staff as part of the council for the duration of the year.
