THE HAYESFIELD CURRICULUM

Humanities Faculty

The study of the humanities subjects (History, Geography, Philosophy & Beliefs and Social Sciences) supports students in understanding who they are, where they have come from and what their future could hold. We help students to travel the world with their studies and make themselves ask questions about these places.

Along their journey, students learn about how different countries live, how they came to be there and what religions and traditions they are home to. By the end of their travels each student has put themselves in the shoes of another citizen around the world and has learnt what it is like to live or have lived in a certain place, period or way.

Faculty Subjects

Geography

Geography provides students with an understanding of the world around them and enables students to contextualise many of the events happening in a world that is changing more rapidly than ever.

Geography is much more than a list of contents. It is a viewpoint and way of making sense of the world by examining the links between different patterns and phenomena. An understanding of Geography helps us understand the relationship between human and natural systems and how they work together and therefore how we can live more sustainably. Studying Geography should change the way that you think.

History

Hayesfield History department believes that students deserve an expansive and ambitious history curriculum that exceeds the remit of the national curriculum. Our offer is rich in subject-specific knowledge that ignites curiosity and skills that prepare students well for future learning and employment.

As a school that is predominantly white British, our curriculum ensures that our students experience other cultures and challenge any misconceptions. As a girls’ school, our curriculum is centred around the changing role of women and seeks to give a voice to women from the past where traditionally they may have been silenced. We seek to celebrate and learn from the achievements of women throughout history.

Philosophy & Ethics

The Philosophy and Beliefs curriculum allows affords students the opportunity to explore their own beliefs and the beliefs of people around them. Being a school that is predominantly white British, with a lack of diversity, we examine the importance of living in a multi-faith society and provide students with the information and experience to be aware of the wider multi-cultural society in which we live. Our key focus is to educate students so that they feel confident in understanding the truth behind misconceptions of different belief systems.

We build on prior knowledge so that students are able to explain their ideas about how beliefs, practices and forms of expression influence individuals and communities. We support students to develop the skills to successfully live in a multi-faith and multicultural society.

Personal, Social, Health and Careers Education (PSHCE)

The key aim of our PSHCE curriculum is to ensure that every one of our students is able to lead a happy, healthy and rewarding life. Regardless of their starting point, we want all of our students to know more, remember more and understand more about how to play a positive and successful role within our society, both as a young person and as an adult.

Our PSHCE Curriculum Aims To:
  • provide a safe and secure environment for students to be informed and to create discussion on important
  • health, personal wellbeing, sex and relationship issues
  • empower students to communicate their ideas, views, and opinions over a wide range of topics clearly,
  • confidently, and respectfully
  • support our students in developing tools and strategies to promote positive mental wellbeing so that they
  • can understand and then deal with exams related anxiety
  • provide a significant amount of time for careers, in line with our school moto of ‘achieving ambitions’ so
  • that our students see that all doors are open to them for future employment possibilities

There are many issues tackled in PSHCE which your daughter may wish to explore further or gain personalised support and help. The support page on the Hayesfield website contains links to the following organisations:

Enriching Learning

In Humanities it is important that students get a sense of the world in which they live. There are field trips to different parts of the UK to study Geography, Historians travel the world and through visits to Temples, Churches and Mosques students gain a real insight to other cultures and religions. We are very proud of our LEAP provision which provides the opportunity for all our students to experience a wide range of activities and discussion groups.
